The Importance of Orthodontic Health

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, making it the perfect time to share why straight teeth do more than just look great—they protect your overall health. This month we are talking about all things’ orthodontic health. Your orthodontic health plays a crucial role in maintaining your overall oral health.

A straight smile is wonderful, but the hidden health benefits are even more important. When teeth are crowded or crooked, brushing and flossing become difficult. Why Orthodontic Health Matters:

  • Prevents Cavities: Plaque builds up in tight spaces. Bacteria create acids that destroy enamel and causes holes. Straight teeth let your toothbrush and floss clean every surface.
  • Protects Your Gums: Trapped plaque irritates the tissue. This leads to red, swollen, or bleeding gums, known as gingivitis.
  • Creates a Better Bite: Proper alignment reduces strain on your jaw muscles. It also stops uneven wear on your tooth surfaces.

With Halloween right around the corner, those undergoing orthodontic treatment should be extra cautious while consuming treats — don’t let candy turn your teeth into something truly frightening! October brings lots of sweet treats, but sticky candy and braces do not mix. Follow the following rules from the American Association of Orthodontists to protect your hardware.

Smart Habits for Braces During Halloween:

  • Say No to Sticky Treats: Avoid caramel, taffy, and gummy candies. They can pull off brackets and bend wires.
  • Skip Hard Snacks: Popcorn, nuts, and hard candies can snap and break your equipment.
  • Choose Soft Alternatives: Melt-in-your-mouth chocolate is a much safer choice for braces than sticky, gummy candies.
  • Clean Extra Often: Brush after every meal and floss daily to clear out hidden sugar.

Modern orthodontics provide excellent options to straighten your teeth and enhance your overall health. The two most popular choices are traditional metal braces and clear tray aligners. Traditional braces are the gold standard for addressing complex bite issues and severe crowding. They are also suitable for children and teenagers who may not be able to wear removable trays. On the other hand, clear tray aligners have gained immense popularity among adults and older teenagers seeking a discreet appearance and the freedom to eat their favorite foods without restrictions.

If you’ve been considering orthodontic treatment, October (or any month!) is a great time to schedule a visit with us at Carl G Estler DDS. An orthodontic evaluation will let you know just what we can do to help you create a beautiful and healthy smile.

“Found them on TikTok to help my TMJ. This is my 4th doctor I’ve seen and I am sooo happy! I finally found someone that listens and understands! Literally I didn’t have to say much and they knew exactly what I’m going through and didn’t call me crazy! I promise it didn’t cost so much. The lowest price I have ever heard and they’re so sweet! They’re amazing I promise it’s worth it!” - Miss Niyah
